History of South Western Motorway The South Western Motorway (SH20) was constructed in stages during the late 1970's, early 1980's and late 1990's to provide more efficient connections to Auckland Airport and Manukau City and starting the long process of the still incomplete Western Ring Motorway Network. The first section of the South Western Motorway started construction in late 1977, the section was only a short approach to the old Mangere bridge bypassing the busy Onehunga area. The present Mangere Bridge after a very long and negative construction process was completed in March 1983. It connected the already used Onehunga bypass to the newly completed crossing to create a total section between Neilson Street and Coronation Road of 1.8km. In 1997 the Coronation Road to Puhinui Interchange, and link to Kirkbride Road section was completed. The Mt Roskill Extension was completed on the 15th of May 2009, extending from Hillsborough Road to Maioro Street. Other projects on the South Western Motorway include the Mangere Bridge Duplication & Surrounding Widening project and the Manukau Extension Project. This extension is one of the projects that is part of the Western Ring Motorway Network. The Western Ring motorway will offer a much needed alternative to the overloaded Northern and Southern Motorways. Approved Project | $1.4bn | Construction Period: Mid-late 2011 to completion in 2015 The Waterview Connection will be the final part of the South Western Motorway extensions and improvements. It will be the most expensive and last section completed under the Western Ring Route project. This project will incorporate 4.5km of tunnel and conventional surface motorway between the completed Mt Roskill Extension and the North Western Motorway Waterview interchange. There are only two interchanges along the route, one at Maioro Street and the termination interchange at Waterview. It will be two lanes in each direction, with built capacity for three lanes. An interchange with New North Road has not been included because of engineering issues, more land acquisition, safety concerns, open space loss and overall a connection would create congestion and more traffic in the Avondale area than alleviate it. Recently there have been two previous proposals on this project. Around 2007-2008 the expensive $2.89 billion fully bored tunnels, and in mid-2009 the revised cheaper option which affected more properties. This option, compared with the mid-2009 option, affects 205 houses, 160 less. 140 of those 205 houses are currently owned by the Crown. You can view the NZTA PDF map of the alignment here. You can view the previous $2.89bn proposal on our existing page here. Polling on this website for this previous proposal; 83% of voters liked the project, 17% did not. You can also view the mid-2009 previous proposal here. Polling on this website for this previous proposal; 27% of voters liked the project, 73% did not.
