Northcote to Sunnynook Widening When traveling along the Northern Motorway at peak times you used to hit congestion around Esmonde Road all the way to Sunnynook, sometimes banking all the way back to the Auckland Harbour Bridge causing a major headache for commuters. This congestion was not directly caused by more traffic entering the motorway at surrounding on-ramps, but caused by the Tristram Ave 'bottleneck'. The project has addressed this problem. |
Complete and Open; $9.8m The widening project involved the addition of a new northbound lane between Northcote Road on-ramp and Sunnynook Overbridge. The extra lane used available median space which had been reserved. The Wairau Road and Tristram Ave overpasses were widened to accommodate the extra lane and new barriers were installed to maintain safety. The new lane arrives at Sunnynook where it turns into the slow lane on the Sunnynook Hill, where it was three lanes already. |
This has induced congestion between Tristram and Greville Road, which will be the next section to be widened. |
