The Creator of AucklandMotorways.co.nz

Hello I'm Benjamin Paul, 20, I began to make this website in October 2004 and it was relatively small then but as I predicted now the site is a huge success.

I take all the photos on the site myself, do all the graphic design, type, edit and research all the information and own the rights to the website. My parents have no part in the business of transport or directly help me financially with the site, I fund it out of my own pocket. Transport or 'organised-chaos' is a passion and hobby of mine, which is what prompted me to design the website, also the lack of information and knowledge was not justified, because people should know how their daily trips and community's are affected. The site was not created because of a school project or competition, it was out of personal interest.

I work on call at the ATTOMS traffic centre for NZTA/Time Saver Traffic for Radio Network, have had scholarships offered from Projenz Engineering and Transit New Zealand. I work at Civic Video in Hauraki Corner on Saturdays, import products from the U.S. and run a web-design company. I am currently studying at Auckland University double-majoring in Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies and Bachelor of Laws.

I hope you enjoy and find the site useful. Feel free to contact me.
Cheers, Benjamin.

Motoring guru at 17

He is only 17 but Ben Paul's website on Auckland's motorway network is proving popular with frustrated Auckland motorists.

It gets around 2500 hits a day*. The site www.aucklandmotorways.co.nz, created by the Takapuna Grammar student when he was 14, is regularly mistaken as an official Transit site. It contains a wealth of information about construction work on Auckland motorways, so much so that Ben has already had a job offer from Transit. He says the website came about because of his natural interest in roading, his passion for Auckland and a desire to build his own site. It began with a few pages on spaghetti junction and grew when more information was available and other projects started. He says he was also frustrated by Transit's own website and wanted to make his more user-friendly. People often misunderstand the details of Transit's plans and get angry or complain when the information isn't easy to access, he says. "When I talk to people they often ask why hasn't anyone told them about things."

Ben takes his own pictures to put on the site and creates maps to demonstrate the new layout of roads. He also creates forms and polls to gauge visitor opinion. His newest page is about Transit and North Shore City Council's failure to address traffic congestion on the Esmonde Rd interchange. Ben says he thinks Transit and the council aren't keen to tackle congestion on Esmonde Rd because it encourages more people to use the busway. On his website he describes it as the "Esmonde Rd syndrome" where four link roads joining Esmonde Rd merge into one lane in a "city-bound choke point". His site has also generated interest from engineering companies that have been impressed by it and offered him tours of construction sites. When he is contacted by people, most are surprised to discover he's only 17. But that hasn't stopped him from presenting his website to Transit in a "boardroom with all these men in suits", he says. Ben admits is it an unusual pastime for a 17-year-old but he says he is still a regular, albeit busy teenager. "It's actually quite surprising how little time it takes. Most of the work is when people ask questions." Ben spends the rest of his time studying for his year 12 NCEA exams, running his small import business, where he sells popular American products such as perfume to friends and on trademe, and working part-time at the Emerald Inn. He says he plans to go to university to study town planning, perhaps specialising in transport planning.
