The Western Ring Route is a network of motorways that includes the Upper Harbour, North Western and South Western Motorways. Currently the Upper Harbour Motorway is complete, the South Western is 3/4 complete, the North Western Widening is under construction along with the Waterview Connection. Overall five out of the seven projects are complete.
There are also two improvement projects under proposal for the terminus points of the network in Albany/Upper Harbour and between Manukau and Papakura on the Northern & Southern motorways to improve the connections with existing motorways.
The purpose of the Western Ring Route is to create an alternative to the busy Southern and Northern motorways. By offering a non-stop link between south and north Auckland, bypassing the CBD. The Western Ring Route is also important because it connects to the international airport and offers a non-stop link for freight between the port in the CBD, the Airport and the inland port at Manukau.
The Western Ring Route also prioritises motorway corridors for usage of specific suburbs and final trip destination, the complete South Western Motorway will offer connections from the west to the south (large employment areas) and the Southern Motorway will then provide connections for eastern and central suburbs.
